The Koenigsegg Agera One:1 was just unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, and is highly important for the automotive world because it achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 1. The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! got me thinking, what if every car, your car, had a power to weight ratio of 1?
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The Koenigseeg Agera One:1 achieves this momentous power-to-weight ratio with a home-bred 5.0 liter V8 engine producing 1,322 bhp (or 1340 metric horsepower) all while sustaining a slimming mass of 1,340 kg (or just 2,954 in gravity-driven pounds).
There are two ways to go about imagining a car's change in power-to-weight: either you reduce the weight, or you increase the power (assuming metric hp=bhp, to make things easier). Let's start with a few ordinary cars...
BMW 3-Series
Standard:
power : 180 hp 2.0L hp I4
curb weight : 3,410 lbs (1,546 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
With Power-to-Weight Ratio of 1:
Increase power to : 1,546 hp
or
Reduce curb weight to : 397 lbs (180 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Toyota Camry
Standard:
power : 178 hp 2.5L I4
curb weight : 3,190 lbs (1,446 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
With Power-to-Weight Ratio of 1:
Increase power to : 1,446 hp
or
Reduce curb weight to : 392 lbs (178 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Ford F-150
Standard:
power : 365 hp 3.5L V6
curb weight : 4,685 lbs (2,125 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
With Power-to-Weight Ratio of 1:
Increase power to : 2,125 hp
or
Reduce curb weight to : 805 lbs (365 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Fiat 500
Standard:
power : 101 hp 1.4L I4
curb weight : 2,363 lbs (1,071 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
With Power-to-Weight Ratio of 1:
Increase power to : 1,071 hp
or
Reduce curb weight to : 223 lbs (101 kg)
Just Imagine being able to bench-press a Fiat 500.
Those were ordinary cars, and you should expect those adjusted numbers to seem a bit outrageous. The cars below are considered to be incredibly fast for most of us, and they should be closer to a power-to-weight ratio of 1.
Chevrolet Corvette (C7)
Standard:
power : 455hp 6.2L V8
curb weight : 3,298 lbs (1,496 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
With Power-to-Weight Ratio of 1:
Increase power to : 1,496 hp
or
Reduce curb weight to : 1,003 lbs (455 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Nissan GT-R
Standard:
power : 545hp 3.8L V6
curb weight : 3,829 lbs (1,737 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
With Power-to-Weight Ratio of 1:
Increase power to : 1,737 hp
or
Reduce curb weight to : 1,202 lbs (505 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Lotus Elise
Standard:
power : 134 hp 1.6L I4
curb weight : 1,598 lbs (725 kg)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
With Power-to-Weight Ratio of 1:
Increase power to : 725 hp
or
Reduce curb weight to : 295 lbs (134 kg)
Suddenly, that 1:1 power-to-weight ratio seems a bit more outrageous. The brains at Koenigsegg have been innovating their way to speed, but their weight saving techniques may soon find themselves in our everyday cars.
Automakers need to find ways to increase their average mpg ratings, as the ever-increasing CAFE standards rise with time. An easy way to decrease fuel consumption is to cut weight, and with manufacturers research into 3D printing and carbon fiber chassis construction becoming more of a reality everyday, perhaps it's not so far off to envision bench pressing your new Ford Focus after all.

The Lotus actually seems doable... I mean, cars with over 700 h are pretty common nowadays, and I wonder how much weight you'd have to put on to get to that figure, and how much more weight would go on to make it drivable/livable with. Maybe 850 to 900 hp would be about right.

Maybe a bit off topic, but I've seem Mr. Koenigsegg at their (tiny tiny) stand during both press days a Geneva Motor Show few days ago. Everytime I went by Koenigsegg stand, he was just chatting with normal mortals, for two days in a row, no PR, marketing nonsense, no introduction of chairman of board of "we-don'-t-really-care-about-cars-we-just-like-money" kind of suit guys. Here's my photo proof.
Just a man with his own car company. Do you realise how unique that its nowadays? Yes you can't compare high volume car makers with niche ones, but hey, what would Louis Renault and Andre Citroen or Gottlieb Daimler say to the companies that now have their names on them? I bet some of them would be very sad to say at least.
So that's why this is such a fantastic thing to see at a car show like this. I was just to shy to shake Koenigseggs hand. Boo to myself.

I really like how Koeniggseg (if I spelled that correctly on first try, I'll shit) has brought forward the "megawatt" to the masses. A lot of people have asked what a "megacar" is, and it's not that it's one more than "hyper". I am a huge fan of Koeniggseg and therefore LOVE this car. I'd love to see it wipe the smile off of Bugatti's smug faces after it hits top speed, in both directions of course.

Interesting calling it 1:1 when it's a comparison of two numbers using different measures. Like the Lincoln currently advertising economy the same as it's price - I keep trying to figure out what that really means. For aircraft, magic is a 1:1 thrust to weight ratio (both using the same measure), which means vertical climb. Would the more appropriate automotive magic be a 1:1 rear wheel thrust to weight ratio? Or better yet, a 1:1 price to weight ratio! $3000 super car YES!!

I know he has an obscene amount of money into it, though I don't have an exact figure. I'm not sure if the supercharger bleeds off completely once the turbo is spooled but I don't think so. I think it actually makes less top end power now with the turbo and supercharger, and more lower end torque.

Yes but how much does it weigh? You said 2.7 lbs/hp, which means calculates the weight to around 1800 lbs, 200 more than a standard elise, and still 152 hp short of the 1:1 kg:hp ratio.
wzzkll
> xxstich666xx
03/06/2014 at 20:05 | 0 |
Yeah, you can multiply the power of a car relatively easily if you're willing to drop in a monster motor (would probably need a twin turbo LS V8 in this case, or for all of 5 seconds the original engine with a HUUUUGGGEEE turbo), but it's impossible to take that much weight out. Even if you carbon fiber everything, remove the body panels, roof mechanism, seats, interior, glass, suspension, and more, a real, non kiddy toy scale Miata won't weigh 128kg.
Who cares what the fox says?
> TheSmokingTire
03/06/2014 at 20:06 | 0 |
Yeah I bet it is simpler to not have it bleed off, but it would be better for power at higher rpm. Still, cool build. I'm thinking of doing something like that but with a much bigger engine. If I do it, and it doesn't explode, I'll let you know.

Again, just an example. No bike out there is gonna come close to 1:1 once the rider is factored in, though the Panigale beats 1:1 without a rider.
Also:
BMW S1000RR - 193hp
Ducati 1199 Panigale R - 195hp
Suzuki Hayabusa - 197hp
It may be heavy, but it's still relevant.

The Caterham Levante is basically just as you described. 520kg, "over 500hp" 2.4L supercharged V8, which is pretty spot on 1hp/kg. Insane car.

It makes me LOL every time I see anything from Koenigsegg and they mention the home built V8 even if it is a lightly modified Ford Modular V8. It still shares the Ford architecture.

1500 HP in a Camry... torque steer wouldn't even describe it. It would rip off the front of the car.
